Youngsters printing flaw:- It has come to my attention that there
is a computer error in the
typesetting on pages 36-38.
'Over the next few days Adam began to settle in on
the program but realised the busy work schedule and educational
side of the program was not what he was expecting. Adam noticed
that most of the boys went out of their way to make him feel welcome,
except Stuart. When Ritchie, who had been the previous leader of
the boys left, Jay thought it would be a good idea to nominate Stuart
to take over. This meant that he was now responsible for giving
out the work details for the week and making sure the rest of the
boys were doing their chores properly.
On Adam's first night of making dinner for everyone
he was paired off with Topher. As Topher got on with the task Adam
stood around reluctant to help.
"I’m not here to cook for everyone."
"Hey we are all here to muck in and help each
other, everyone has to take a turn."
"I’ve never cooked anything in my life."
"It’s easy mate, I’ll do most of
it but I’ll show you things as we go. Here you can chop these
tomatoes, you know how to chop tomatoes don’t you?"
"What’s this place all about? How is learning
to cook going to stop anybody from getting into trouble?"
"Hey Adam we are all here for the same reasons
you are. What was it? A broken home, in with the wrong crowd, petty
crime, stealing, drugs, fighting, stabbing…
Adam looks up at Topher as he mentions stabbing.
"Stabbing" Topher says again as he looks
at Adam.
"Well I never actually…" Adam attempts
to plead his case when Topher interrupts by reaching over and taking
the kitchen knife from him.
"I’ll just get you to grate some cheese,
that okay?" Topher says quite seriously.
They both look at each other and start laughing as
Adam realises Topher is only winding him up.
Later the next day the English teacher arrives so
the boys gather in the classroom. As the boys are at different levels
of education they are all left to carry on with their own work and
the teacher comes around individually to see them. Adam sits at
the back and the teacher introduces herself. She has never met Adam
and asks him to complete a set of tasks to find out what level he
is at. Adam completes the tests in half the time allocated and watches
as Casey reads to the rest of the boys. He struggles with some of
the more difficult words but is helped along by the teacher.
"Well done Casey, that’s coming along.
Adam you appear to have finished would you like to start where Casey
finished off."
"Not really." Adam says looking away.
"Excuse me Adam but you were requested on this
program so that we could try to educate you and teach you how to
show some respect. This is for your benefit, to show the authorities
that you are better than what they perceive you to be. We believe
and trust that you are not the type of person whose future lies
in prison. Now take the book and start where Casey left off or I
will inform Jay that you would like to spend the rest of your time
in the Institution."
Adam stands up, walks to the front of the class and
picks up the book from the table and begins to read faultlessly.
He reads two paragraphs and puts the book down.
"Do you want me to continue?"
"No I think you’ve proved your point. Smart
ass." The teacher says smiling at Adam.
After looking at the results of Adams tests and hearing
his reading skills he is started on the same course work as Stuart,
who was until now considered the brain box of the group.'
This, along with several other typing errors will
be rectified on the next print run.
